How to choose your worsted and aran yarn for each project

Worsted yarn is a medium-to-heavy weight, ideal when you want garments and accessories with body that work up quickly and show well-defined stitches. It is worked with 4.5 to 5.5 mm needles and gives around 150-200 metres per 100 grams, with a good balance between warmth and lightness.

The choice depends on how you are going to use it. Cotton adds freshness for blankets and transitional-season garments; virgin wool and merino provide warmth and a soft feel for winter; blown alpaca and merino yarns are lightweight and fluffy; and recycled blends add a sustainable touch. They all share the quality of leading European brands and a wide range of colours, within all weights in our catalogue.

What is the difference between worsted and aran?

Worsted and aran are two names within the same weight range, with one nuance: aran is slightly thicker. Worsted weight gives around 150-200 metres per 100 grams and is worked with 4.5-5.5 mm needles; aran weight is around 135-180 metres and calls for 5-6 mm needles. That is why many brands group them together.

The difference is so subtle that the same pattern can usually take worsted or aran without any problem, and both work up much faster than fine yarns, showing off cables and textured stitches beautifully. If your project calls for even more volume, the next step is chunky / bulky weight.
