It depends on the fibre, but lace weight yarn stands out for its generous metreage: you will usually find between 600 and 1,000 metres per 100 grams. As balls are often available in 25 or 50 grams, it is worth calculating the total metres required by your pattern before buying, as a single ball goes a very long way.

What is lace weight yarn?
Lace weight yarn is the ultimate superfine yarn, the finest yarn available, known internationally as lace yarn and classified as group 0 in the standard yarn weight system. It is knitted with needles between 2 and 4.5 mm and offers very generous metreage, usually between 600 and 1,000 metres per 100 grams.
Extra-fine yarns like this truly shine in lace stitches, lacework and sheer fabrics. Lace weight can be worked on its own for an ethereal finish, or held double to add body without losing lightness. Its high yield means that a single ball goes a very long way, even in large projects.
What to knit with lace yarn: shawls, lacework and lightweight garments
Lace yarn is perfect for projects where lightness and drape take centre stage: shawls, stoles, scarves and summer tops, as well as transeasonal garments with sheer details. If you are looking for yarn for a shawl with movement and a delicate finish, this weight performs like no other.
Thanks to its fineness, lace stitches and lacework look defined and elegant. Final blocking is key: it opens up the pattern, enhances the lacework and sets the drape of the fabric. For a first project, a simple shawl is the best way to discover this yarn.
Fibres in lace yarn: from mohair to silk
Very different fibres come together in this weight. Mohair adds a soft, fluffy halo, ideal for garments that are both warm and lightweight; you can see more options in our mohair yarn in different weights.
Silk adds shine and fluid drape, while mercerised cotton offers freshness and defined stitches for spring and summer. If you prefer plant-based fibres, explore our cotton yarns, also available in other weights.
How to choose your extra-fine yarn
To choose the right extra-fine yarn, look at three details on the label: the metreage, the recommended needle or hook size and the composition. A very fine yarn with generous metreage goes further and is perfect for large projects; if it is your first time working with a superfine yarn, a blend with a little body will make it easier to handle. For sheep wool fibres, our merino wool offers softness and elasticity.
We bring together lace yarns from premium brands, with a wide variety of colours and fibres chosen for their softness and finish. If you are unsure about shades or compositions, at Garmon Yarns we are just a click or a phone call away to help you choose.
