What is Gazzal Super Kid Mohair and why is it so lightweight?

It is a Lace weight yarn combining 47% super kid quality mohair, 31% superwash merino and 22% polyamide. Each 25g ball contains approximately 237m, so it goes a long way and allows you to make generously sized garments that weigh very little.

Kid mohair is the hair of young Angora goats, obtained from their first shearings, and super kid quality is a selection of this fibre. This is what creates the halo: a cloud of fine fibres that surrounds each stitch and gives the fabric its fluffy appearance. The merino, which is superwash treated (a wool treatment that reduces its tendency to felt), adds warmth and elasticity, while the polyamide strengthens the strand so that it stands up better to wear.

How do you knit with kid mohair held double?

Knitting with two strands held together means working two yarns as if they were a single strand. It is one of the most common ways to use this yarn: one strand of this yarn together with a smooth merino or cotton yarn. The base yarn determines the weight and stitch definition, while the mohair adds the halo.

This creates a fluffy, warmer yarn without changing the pattern or technique. A few tips to make it easier to work with:

Garments made with this yarn should be hand washed, as stated on the manufacturer’s label, which also advises against bleach and tumble drying. Although the merino is superwash treated, the mohair blend is delicate, so it is best washed with a mild wool wash, without rubbing or wringing, to preserve the halo.
