A good product combines wool and polyamide, usually in a ratio close to 75/25. Polyamide reinforces the fibre and provides resistance to friction; wool gives warmth, softness and breathability. If it also has a superwash treatment, you can machine wash your socks without them shrinking or losing their shape.

Which yarn should you choose for knitting socks?
To knit long-lasting socks, choose a yarn with polyamide (around 25%) and a superwash treatment, which allows them to be machine washed without shrinking. Polyamide adds strength, while wool provides warmth and softness. It is the combination that best withstands the constant friction of the foot inside footwear.
The most recommended yarn for knitting socks is also known as sock yarn (yarn specifically designed for socks) and offers good elastic recovery so the sock does not lose its shape. Our yarns for knitting socks include blends with polyamide for intensive use and blends with alpaca when you are looking for a warmer feel.
We also have a product available that combines a different wool and alpaca composition for less intensive use, but with a warmer and softer feel, for example, to wear at home without footwear.
What yarn weight is used for socks?
Sock yarn is usually fine, with several twisted plies, to achieve a close-knit fabric and a sock that feels comfortable inside a shoe. It is knitted with fine needles and, depending on the warmth you are looking for, you can choose a lighter or slightly thicker weight. The yarn weight defines the density and durability of the fabric.
To explore each weight in more detail, see our fingering weight yarns, the most commonly used for knitting socks.
For a fabric with a little more body, sport weight yarns are a good alternative.
Sock yarn for winter and all year round
You can knit socks in any season by adjusting the fibre. For cold weather, winter sock yarn with a merino or alpaca blend provides warmth and breathability; for transitional seasons, lighter blends feel fresher.
If warmth is your priority, merino wool for socks is soft and keeps the foot warm without becoming matted.
This same yarn for long socks offers good elastic recovery and glides smoothly as you knit. Also discover our suggestions for the autumn and winter season, ideal for socks and leg warmers.
Our sock yarns are good quality and available in a wide variety of colours. They accompany your projects all year round at Garmon Yarns.
