What is Kremke Reborn Jeans?

Kremke Reborn Jeans is a recycled denim yarn made from 70% cotton, 25% polyester and 5% other fibres. The cotton comes from used jeans and denim jackets, while the polyester comes from recycled PET bottles, which add stability to the strand. Each 100 g ball contains approximately 300 metres.

It is made by a German brand with its own range of reclaimed fibres. It is spun in India at a family-run mill managed by a father and son, which normally produces industrial yarns and developed this yarn specifically for hand knitting.

How is recycled cotton yarn made from denim?

It is made in several stages, all carried out in India. First, used denim garments are collected and the metal components and any materials that are not denim fabric are removed. They are then sorted by colour, broken down into fibres using special machines and the resulting fibre is spun into yarn again.

It is never bleached or dyed at any stage: it is an undyed yarn. That is why it is only available in the shades found in denim itself, blues and greys or blacks, with names such as Blue Denim or Black Denim. The result is a yarn with a genuine denim look because it comes directly from the fabric of the garments.

What does it feel like and what projects is it suitable for?

It has a very soft feel, which the brand compares to a blend of bourette silk and wool. This type of silk is spun from the short fibres left over from silk processing and produces a matt, slightly rustic fabric. With 70% cotton, it is also a cool yarn that feels comfortable to wear when the weather is not very cold.

Before knitting, the strand is less resistant to pulling than a conventional yarn, so avoid pulling hard on the ball or knitting too tightly. Once finished, the garment is as durable as any other knitted fabric.
